Gouldian finches are members of the estrildidae
bird species. There are three primary Gouldian
finches with distinctive color markings.
The red head
The black head
The yellow head
The Gouldian finch known by its scientific name, choebia gouldiae,
is one
of the bird kingdoms most colorful birds. it’s protected by Australian
law
from exportation and is considered an endangered species. Its natively
found
in northern Australia and it is estimated that there are only less than
3,000
birds found in its natural habitat.
Gouldians grow and mature to approximately 5 and 1/2 inches in size and as
in
most animal species the male has the most coloration. It’s
primary food source is
various small seeds and fresh lettuce and spinach. These
birds, like most birds,
are social animals and should be kept in groups of two or
more as they appreciate
companionship.
Gouldian finches are easily kept as pets and have a soft relaxing chirp
and the
males are known to sing to attract mates. They prefer
temperatures around 70
degrees and at least 50% humidity. A small cage about 3'X2' is
a nice size for a pair
of Gouldians and can reside in a small
house or apartment making perfect
pets to enjoy. |
